Harmonic Analysis / Harmonic Study
Harmonics Analysis or Harmonic Study is a theoretical calculation of harmonics distortion parameters in an electrical network. For the Harmonic Analysis of the electrical network using ETAP software harmonic patterns of various equipments can be modeled and the total harmonic distortion in the network can be identified in the design stage itself. The harmonic study results will be helpful for designing active harmonic filters to suppress the harmonics prevailing in the network.
On site harmonic measurements is carried out using power quality analyzer to understand and measure the actual harmonic distortion in the network. Using this harmonic measurements data harmonics study is then carried out to quantify the various harmonic orders present in the system and to arrive at the suitable mitigation methods and solutions. The detailed Harmonic Analysis helps to identify and diminish the root cause behind this harmonic distortion and improves power quality of the system.
Maintaining Power Quality is important because any power quality disturbances in the electrical system can harm the operation of vital equipments in the system. Loads such as electronic converters, Variable frequency drives, computers, UPS, etc are the loads which causes harmonic distortion in the network. Each harmonic load can impact the power quality of the network and it causes equipment malfunctioning, overheating, nuisance tripping etc.
