Motor Starting or Voltage Dip Study
Performing motor starting analysis or motor starting voltage dip study aids in determining motor acceleration time and assessing the effects of motor starting under different conditions on electrical power systems. When large motors or a group of motors started simultaneously it cause voltage dip in the system. The Motor Starting or Voltage dip study determines the voltage, starting and steady state current and starting time involved during the starting of motors.
Using ETAP software, dynamic analysis is carried to study the effects of motor starting. With help of motor starting results proper motor starters can be used to mitigate the effects.
Motor Starting study helps to ensure that the voltage dip during the motor starting is within the acceptable limits. If the voltage dip during the motor starting exceeds acceptable limits, the under voltage relay gets activated which may cause nuisance tripping. So maintaining the system voltage within limit is very much important to maintain the system power quality and reliable operation. Motor starting study is particularly significant in district cooling plants, process industries, etc where large rated motors are used.
