Resonance Calculation
In power system study using ETAP software, Resonance calculation or Harmonic frequency scan analysis is carried out to plot the magnitudes and phase angles of bus driving point impedance over a frequency range. It identifies the points at which voltage or current magnification is happened in the network due to resonance.
Electrical networks consist of various inductive and capacitive elements such as cables, reactors, winding machines, transmission capacitance etc. At any point of time the impedance of the network is depends on the frequency. At some frequencies the inductive and capacitive reactance of the system becomes equal and this frequency range is called Resonant Frequency. Using the ETAP software the resonance calculation is carried out and the frequency range at which the system becomes resonance is identified.
Resonance calculation is essential to verify the selection of capacitor banks and detuning reactors. ETAP will identify resonant frequencies within the power system. Based on the software simulation results solutions can be provided to mitigate the effects of resonant conditions.
